Mike, Mike, Mike! What Day is It?

It's Mike Kreevich day in Oakland. Mike's early game offense paid off in dividends in the late game. Two home runs and five RBI built the wall the A's needed to withstand a late inning surge from the Padres, which coincided with the departure of Don Newcombe in the 6th inning. Seeing that the A's new ace was gone, it was time to take advantage of the bullpen, and when it comes to Bill Hands, it appears the advantage goes to the hitter. The Padres scored two on him rather quickly in the 7th. Hands lasted three innings. Gary Bell took his place and struggled. Three hits and a run for the Padres. It was a bit dicey for Bell, but he managed to keep it together and earn his 5th save. Oakland improves to 14-8, marking it one of the best starts for this team when they were in Texas. There might be a future bobblehead give-a-way of Mike Kreevich in the future.

Johnny Mize made the headlines in Minnesota as the most hated player in the Twin Cities. Mize in typical fashion did what he does best - hit the ball long and far. He was perfect in his five plate appearances with four hits and one walk. Two of those hits were lost in the upper deck and one other was a double. Three RBI were contributed to the seven runs the the Dodgers scored in the Robin Roberts shutout. Roberts struck out seven, walked one and allowed eight hits in the affair. Once again, the Twins gave Moe Drabowsky another shot to proving himself a starter. Reports state he was pleading with hia manager to be put back into the bullpen as a reliever.

The Mets finally broke their latest losing streak, all due to their only pitching star - Sandy Koufax. It was another 10 strikeouts in six innings pitched. An Arky Vaughn home run and Kip Selbach's two doubles were the only things to spoil Koufax's day on the mound. As for Ray Culp, the Mets greeted him at the door. The Mets scored five in the first inning. Ted Kluszewski mashed his 4th home run, a two run delivery to cap the inning off. After that, the Mets leaned on Dixie Walker and Bill Terry to make things happen. A total of 13 runs might have marked the Mets one bright shining moment in Season 32 and that says a lot about this team.
